About me
I’m passionate for Jesus, Anne, liberty, small groups, one-on-one conversations, and Michigan football (which is pretty much my only hobby).
How to pronounce my name: Stych as in bike.
A Bible verse that I love and does a decent job of describing me: Isaiah 6:8. “And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me.’” I like to be “The Man in the Arena.”
I retired in 2023. During my 40 years of working for a paycheck, I was a journalist for 20 years (The Associated Press when I was young and American City Business Journals in my 50s) and a small-business owner for 20 years in between (printing company).
I’m an introvert who has learned to play to his strengths. So I write and I try to spend a lot of time in small-group settings and one-on-one conversations. That means lots of breakfasts with other men and lots of after-church lunches with my wife and another couple.
Anne and I attend Good Shepherd Anglican Church in Cornelius, North Carolina (in the Charlotte area). We have three adult children and two grandchildren.
I lead Good Shepherd’s men’s Bible study, and Anne and I lead a Life Group at our home. I also lead a group of men at Bible Study Fellowship. I’ve been a part of BSF for more than 35 years. In fact, I was saved at my first BSF meeting at the age of 27 in Edina, Minnesota.
I am the co-founder of The India Pastors Project. Since 2021, Chuck Myers, Tim Brown and I have used Zoom to teach pastors in India more about scripture. Most only have a surface-level understanding of the faith, and they are so poor they can’t afford seminary or books.
We hold both three-day conferences where a couple hundred pastors will travel to a conference center — and we hold one-day conferences where about 50 pastors will come together in a village. Our liaison in India is Pastor KP, who travels around in his van setting up the technology and translating all of our teachings.
It’s amazing that three average guys can sit in front of their computer screens in America at 2 a.m. and teach about Jesus to men and women in India.
What do I write about?
My strength as a writer is as an observer, chronicler and memoirist. Much of my writing is focused on Christianity, including updates on our India ministry. But I also write about interesting things that happen in my everyday life. I try to connect those things to a bigger picture and to God himself.
Much of my writing is connected to encouraging people to join small groups and to meet in-person one-on-one with people.
